Quickly looking at the shuffle, we now have 21 full ministers, 3 ministers of state and 9 parliamentary secretaries. This is 33 members of the government caucus with some sort of role that connects to the executive.
When we then count the speaker, the whip and deputy whip, 36 of the 48 members of the government caucus have some extra role. It concerns me when so many of the government MLAs are not private members, it weakens the ability of the legislative branch of government to hold the executive to account.
This constantly increasing number of government MLAs or MPs with a formal role beyond being a representative of the public is trend happening everywhere in the country and it is not a positive change. The time has come for limits to the size of the executive to be returned to the BC Constitution.
